16/12/19 The flight from Kathmandu to Delhi took me right along the Himalayas and I was able to spot many of the great places and mountain peaks I visited over the past weeks in Nepal. In my mind I went over all the incredible experiences this country gave me. Dhanyabad, Nepal!

14/12/19 In Kathmandu I was hosted by a very friendly family, who provided me with an ideal basis to get all the stuff done I needed to do. The day before her flight I gave her a nice wash - It's her first flight after all ;)

09/12/19 This picture was taken just moments before I started the engine one last time to ride the final leg of this journey which showed me all these wonderful people and places. I knew it for quite some time before, but in this moment I felt it almost painfully - I'm going to miss walking up to my bike every morning, not knowing where exactly we would end up, but knowing that the day would bring this undescribable feeling of discovery, adventure and freedom.

08/12/19 Just like in the Karakorum, I could have imagined nicer routes than just backtracking the same way I came, but this time I just didn't want to believe it were my last hours in the Himalayas :(

05/12/19 Tilicho Lake and on the left "the barrier" that prevented the French Annapurna Expedition in 1950 to attack Annapurna from this side. In the end they found a feasible route to the west of the lake and were the first to summit this mountain.

30/11/19 Due to an election in the Pokhara area, I was not able to continue my trip as planned, so another rest day it was. This brought me probably the greatest coincidence of the trip, meeting someone from Freiburg and only by a matter of hours missing her friend I actually know in person - what a crazy, tiny world this is!

28/11/19 After the days back in the Terai, the lowlands of Nepal, I was looking forward to getting into the mountains again. The homestay in Bardia National Park had already recommended Tansen as a night stop and turned out to be a really nice place in the foot hills of the great Annapurna range.

27/11/19 In Lubmini, the birth place of Buddha, all major nations built Buddhist temples to worship this holy place. While going through, you feel a bit like walking through the embassy enclave in Islamabad.

25/11/19 Taking a walk through through Bardia National Park. Although this Park is home to many wild animals like Rhinos, Monkeys, Elephants and Tigers you can walk through it with a guide to try and spot something. Tiger tracks everywere along the paths, but no tiger in sight.

23/11/19 After a great day of riding I was on the final descent into Surkhet when I noticed some significant power loss. My plan was to take the bike to a mechanic the next day to have a look into the airfilter, but in the morning all shops were closed - saturday. So after all these months, the day had finally come for me, the absolute motorcycle mechanics greenhorn, to do some actual working on the bike since its a somewhat tricky procedure to get to the airfilter, located under the tank.Long story short: this is what my airfilter box looked like. The airfilter box usually should be spotlessly clean. Those loads of sand don't actually belong there!

20/11/19 In Talcha, near Rara lake, I stayed with this family. As it was close to 3000m of altitude, the temperatures where soon in the evening below freezing, so the family invited me to sit with them in the kitchen, have some food and warm up at the fire with some local kodo alcohol ;)

20/11/19 Nagma Bazaar - a typical village along the Karnali "Highway" leading up to Rara lake. Many villages along this road are called "bazaar" as they developed from being simple bazaars, where people from the mountain villages around sold their products.

17/11/19 In this region every village has its own village god and over the past few weeks there were celebrations all over the area to worship these gods. The festival in Kalena, a settlement even further up in the mountains than Silgadhi, was the last one for this year, so I was very lucky to see it. For quite a while we rode our bikes over a serious offroad track up into the higher mountains. In my mind I was picturing a small gathering of the local village people but my jaw dropped when I saw the actual amount of people. Roughly 2000 people came from the neighbouring villages in traditional dresses to attend the ceremony. To the rhythm of drums these priests got possessed by their god and started dancing wildly before the marching ritual started. Incredible to observe! Being able to take part in a traditional Nepali festival in one of the remotest regions of the country left a great impression on me

As 2020 is "Tourism Year" in Nepal and the road therefore is being paved, I had my fun fighting through quite some rough road conditions.

14/11/19 After a day of easy riding through beautiful green hills, this view kept me reading my book and enjoying the scenery for quite some time. As the sun was about to set anyway, I ended up staying in the next village - Silgadhi.

20/10/19 This side valleys of Karakorum Highway leads to Khaplu and further in to Hushe. In the area around Hushe there are many mountains of 7000m and 8000m, which makes Hushe the starting point for many expeditions, e.g. going for K2.

24/10/19 View over the Bazhin glacier onto Nanga Parbat covered in clouds druing the Basecamp trek. The trek itself is no big deal, only 10km hiking to get there. However the mood I was in, the cloudy weather, being able to sit alone and in silence in the basecamp from where during summer the real adventures start and knowing that somewhere up there in the dense clouds lies this mountain, that has written so many tragic and heroic stories, made the days at the foot of Nanga Parbat incredibly intense.

02/11/19 Badshahi Mosque, Lahore. Even for Pakistanis smog is very dense these days here in Lahore. People are advised to put on masks when moving through the city. Breathing this air is said to be equal of smoking 22 cigarettes a day -.-

11/11/19 As I had left the mountains, I decided to try and do the remaining stretch to the Nepalese border rather fast. Well, I tried - with constantly changing road conditions, from perfect highway to baaad pothole-gravel strips and partly wild traffic I didn't manage to get the km done I had planned.After this rough day I spent quite some at the food stall of this maybe 15 year old chap, who really impressed me as a master of speed cooking. And delicious!

This town is more than 200km eastwards off of KKH and only accessible over 200km of pothole- and construction site hell or the 4000m high and by this time because of snow often closed Deosai National Park, which I also wanted to see. I went for it - and it took me 12h for 220km.

23/10/19 Staying at guesthouses in some places means being a client. In the guesthouse in Rupal, right in the shadow of mighty Nanga Parbat, there were only some locals working for wildlife preservation and me, so we sat with the guy running the guesthouse in the kitchen and had the greatest time.

22/10/19 Up until I drove up from Chilas to the entrance of Deosai National Park I did not know, if I would be able to enter this said to be beautiful place, or if I would have to turn around and go for another 12h ditching pottholes. I was lucky. Felt like a short trip to Scottland :)

09/11/19 Shimla was one of those places that completely out of the unexpected turned out to be a wonderful place. Though quite packed with local tourists, I had a great time roaming through this city built into the hill and its very atmospheric narrow market streets and stairs.

20/10/19 From all remote areas I saw in northern Pakistan, this valley to Hushe definitely was the most amazing one. Tiny villages with people living like many years ago, yet super curious. Riding into this valley with the sunset adding perfect lighting was just incredible

28/10/19 Large protest marches where forming everywhere in the country and heading towards Islamabad to protest the current government. What I experienced quite often with Police and Army guys, is them initially being pretty unrelaxed seeing me, interrogating me with cold faces on open street about my intentions. After the understand what my plans are they become the most friendly, joking people who immediately invite you for chai and ask you to stay with their family for the night.

04/11/19 Sitting directly behind the border, I thought that Amritsar would not be more than a border hub with hotels and some industry, but oh, was I wrong. Besides getting in contact with the Indian citylife for the first time, I spent hours walking around this temple, seeing the many sacred shrines, talking to many great locals about everything and nothing and tasting the delicious food the temple provides for everyone for free - 20.000 meals a day! One guy volunteering there took me to the kitchen - it's massive!
04/11/19 Sitting directly behind the border, I thought that Amritsar would not be more than a border hub with hotels and some industry, but oh, was I wrong. Besides getting in contact with the Indian citylife for the first time, I spent hours walking around this temple, seeing the many sacred shrines, talking to many great locals about everything and nothing and tasting the delicious food the temple provides for everyone for free - 20.000 meals a day! One guy volunteering there took me to the kitchen - it's massive!

03/11/19 Border closing ceremony, Wagah Border between Pakistan and India. One of the things I was specifically looking forward to on this route and definitely even more powerful and impressive than expected.Leaving Pakistan was definitely sad, but I was at peace with my mind, as I had experienced some of the truely best days I ever had travelling. 14/10/19 Despite the deathroads in Bolivia and Turkey being scary - I would say that the path into Shimshal valley is way more dangerous. No patches of grass next to the tracks as elswhere, just vertical, rocky cliffs

13/10/19 Chipursan Valley. After being the center of attraction for everyone at the chinese border for over an hour, I new it was getting late for Chipursan valley. However I still decided to go for it and ended up in a tiny village with no guesthouse and a perfect campspot just at the edge of a cliff

13/10/19 I guess I will never be able to accurately describe the feelings I had this day. The highest border gate of the world ontop of a pass, of which so many said it would be too late by now. In a way this point was one of my mostly anticipated points during my weeks in Pakistan - reaching the majestic Chinese Border gate on Khunjerab Pass at 4693m and crucial point of the ancient silk route. When I reached the end of the hairpins and entered a plateau, I knew I was getting closer and I asked myself how far it might be from here. Before I was able to finish my thoughts I saw it - what was impressively big and majestic in my mind was now just a small dot in the landscape. One could think that this could have been a disillusioning moment, but I had no time for that - Look at the beauty of this Valley! :)

12/10/19 Attabad Lake is a lake that was created by a landslide in 2010. It has an incredibe color, especially when the sun shines onto it. Unfortunately they constructed tunnels around it - previously each and every vehicle going on the Karakorum Highway had to be shipped across it.
